BLEEDING HEART (SIMIEN MOUNTAINS, ETHIOPIA)
Bleeding heart
Lion's mane
Leopard's maw
Gelada baboons, an endemic species to the Simien Mountains, surround us laden with fleas and vague dreams. At the ocher abyss's edge, the herd of leonine males, noisy females and skittish youngs hangs around before rushing down the cliff jumping from branch to branch. Delousing, catching fleas, pulling weeds in handfuls, screaming like possessed, compulsively mating, fighting, showing their fangs, looking at me sideways with their hazel eyes, as I was not there or was just a shadow. I am the strange shadow.
The inverted triangle on their hairless chest resembles a pierced heart in procession. Males flutter in the wind their superb golden mane that gives them savannah lion's size. Gelada baboons reign on Ethiopian heights where ravens, kites and lammergeiers fly.
